Mr. Duddy

Welcome to our new school year for geometry! I am Andrew Duddy (Mr. Duddy) and will be your child’s teacher this year. I am teaching multiple subjects this year in math and science. I hope to help guide your child to discover the insights of the universe and how our world fundamentally interacts with itself. A new school year provides the opportunity for new starts and a fresh slate of possibilities for their education. So, let’s get this year started on the right foot. 

 

I have an extensive background in math and science both academically and professionally. I received a bachelor’s of science in metallurgical and materials engineering from Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado. This engineering degree was a combination of material chemistry and the physical application of various material properties in engineering settings. I have worked in manufacturing in my past in both a large steel mill and a smaller aerospace manufacturing facility. I like to think of my background as scientific blacksmithing. I had the chance to substitute teach at the University of Portland to an introductory mechanical engineering class. That is where I discovered my true passion for teaching! The past year I have transitioned from engineering to education by utilizing the Teaching Apprenticeship Program at Champlain College in Vermont. I practiced the theory of teaching that I learned from the lectures through Champlain College at Milton Middle School. 

 

I think math is viewed as a difficult barrier which we all have to pass through in our education. This is unfortunate because it does not reflect the true potential of mathematics. This year I will be teaching geometry. I am very excited about this because geometry is so incredibly useful even if the student has no interest in the STEM fields. Mathematics is the language in which the universe operates. It describes the patterns and relationships that dictate our lives. Geometry is an ancient discipline that our most distant ancestors have toyed with. Archaeologists have discovered evidence that ancient Babylonaians were familiar with geometric theorems 3,700 years ago. More than a thousand years ago before the Greeks so famously wrote down the geometric axioms. Math is viewed as the language of science, but I think it is so much more than just science. Math describes the rhythms and patterns of our lives. I hope to bring this understanding to your child in the classroom so that they can apply this field to wherever their interests are.
