BS Biology-Plattsburgh State University Master of Science in Teaching-Plattsburgh State

Mr. Dennis DeLena

I was born in New York and moved here to join the WMHS team in 1999.  I came to education in an unconventional way, getting my undergraduate in Biology with minors in chemistry and art, never considering teaching as a vocation.  I then spent a decade in various jobs, some biology related and some not.  My jobs ranged from caring for marine mammals at an aquarium and as a diver for hire in Connecticut, cake decorating in Rhode Island, working with a Physical Therapist and tutoring Olympic athletes in Lake Placid, New York, teaching Anatomy and Physiology as an adjunct teacher at North Country Community College in Saranac Lake, New York and waiting tables everywhere.  In that time I realized teaching was my passion and earned my masters in teaching from Plattsburgh State University.

Now in my 23rd year, I have come to love this community and the students here.  I love teaching about science, life, culture, and how everything connects to everything.  I am first and foremost committed to teaching critical thinking.  Students can tackle any problem if they can think deeply and tap their creative sides.  We should all question everything but then have the skills to dig deep, find the relevant evidence and knowledge and apply that in a thoughtful way.  I enjoy skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, biking, kayaking, sailing, and SCUBA diving.
